Transition - Primary to Secondary
Transition simply means moving from Year 6 to Year 7.
Starting a new school is an exciting time. At Calday Grange Grammar School we pride ourselves on our smooth and extensive transition process. Once your application has been accepted we will start to work with you and your child to ensure the journey to Calday is as smooth as possible.
Most of us can recall some memory from our first day(s) at 'big school'. Some are filled with the joy of more independence and becoming a grown-up, others bring out chills and cold sweats. Either way, it was (and still is) an emotional time with a lot of upheaval and change which can have long lasting effects on a student's life at school. We acknowledge this fact and place great importance upon ensuring that a student's move here is as successful and positive as possible for all concerned.
At Calday we operate an open door policy for information sharing between all the key parties surrounding our students, with a drive for complete transparency. This system has lead to proven success allowing us all to have an input into the students wellbeing and deal with any concerns effectively. We value the whole support team and recognise that every student has differing individual needs and circumstances.
The move to 'big school' will be here before you know it and we are here to work with you throughout the process and into Year 7.
Transition September 2020
TRANSITION WILL LOOK VERY DIFFERENT THIS YEAR DUE TO COVID-19 BUT WE ARE WORKING ON PLANS TO HELP MAKE A SMOOTH TRANSITION FROM YEAR 6 TO YEAR 7
Message for students
Your transition to Calday Grange Grammar School is very important to us and we will do everything possible to ensure a smooth move from your primary school.
Our Transition Team has already chatted to your Year 6 teachers to gather information which will help us to place you into your new form groups. When this is done, your form tutors will be in touch to introduce themselves to you.
We are also going to sending out some fun tasks to you from each of the subject departments for you to complete if you want. It will help you get an idea about studying that subject and what to expect in September. These are listed below in the 'Comms sent so far...' section.
Whilst you are waiting, you might want to have a look at the ‘BBC Bitesize - Starting Secondary School’ website, which has lots of tips, clips and resources all about transition to secondary school www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize

What happens next?
This is what would usually happen during a normal transition year
Primary School Visit
Member of staff will be visiting the primary schools to meet with the Year 6 teachers to ensure that we receive all the required information to support students academic progress. They will aslo meet with our new students to answer any questions that they might have and let them know what will be happening over the next few months.
We hold a uniform evening, which is a great opportunity for students to try on samples sizes of the blazer and PE kit prior to ordering. Further details will be sent to parents closer to the date.
New Parents Evening
This is an opportunity to meet with staff involved in the transfer and settlement of students from Year 6 into Year 7. Parents will meet in smaller groups and have the opportunity to speak to teaching and support staff. Further details will be sent to parents closer to the date.
Year 6 students who have accepted their place at Calday will come and spend the full day in school. This is a great opportunity for students to make new friends, attend new and exciting lessons and to meet members of staff and current students. Students should wear their primary school uniform. Students often feel more confident and reassured about the move after their transition day has taken place.
This private sports venture is held at the school during the summer holiday and is run by Mr Lamprey who is also a teacher of sport at the school. The camp is available to any child aged 7 however, new Year 7 students are grouped together, giving them a chance to meet new friends, whilst familiarising themselves with members of staff and the facilities before they arrive in September. This has proved to be an excellent introduction to their new school. More details can be found at calday.co.uk/newstarters
The first day at school
It’s a quieter day as just Year 7 and Year 12 students are in school. Students will spend the day with their form tutors where they will receive their timetable and other information before normal lessons start with the rest of the school, who return to school the following day. School buses and coaches will be operating on this day.
