On 5th July, at the magnificent St George’s Hall in Liverpool, 31 school chess teams comprising 400 pupils from around the region gathered to battle it out in, what would become, a nail biting tournament with the secondary school result coming down to the very final board.

Calday’s team of 6 was Tom Winston (yr 13), Tony Tatar (Yr 12), Jack Farrell (yr 9), Zach Poulson (Yr 9), Ethan Miah-Garcia (Yr 7) and Dylan Salisbury (Yr 7). Over 5 rounds, our players in the inaugural Secondary School Chess in Schools and Communities annual tournament, edged into first place by half a point, taking the trophy and shield against some exceptional players of national standing.

Many of the Calday players have played in online chess tournaments since primary school and play regularly in the Wirral Secondary School league on the popular digital platform Lichess.com.
