Many male staff and sixth form students at Calday are taking part in Movember 2019 by growing their moustache during the month of November in aid of male mental and physical health.
Mental health - Globally, on average, one male dies by suicide every minute of every day. Around the world, the rate of male suicide is 6 in every 10 cases, and it is the most common cause of death for young men in the UK. The aim is to reduce the rate of male suicide by 25% by 2030. By growing moustaches, males are promoting the power of conversation: a quick talk with someone who is struggling can make a massive difference, and the moustache will help us to start these conversations. Donations will go towards crucial projects such as raising awareness, encouraging other countries to take more action, and running workshops for young men.
Testicular cancer - Testicular cancer is notorious for striking young: it’s the most common cancer in young men in the UK. The promising thing is that it has a 95% survival rate, though that is of no comfort to the 1 male in 20 who doesn’t make it. The aim is to halve the number of men dying from testicular cancer, and to halve the number of men facing serious ongoing side effects from treatment, both by 2030. Donations will go towards raising awareness, bringing the best minds across the globe together to collaborate, tackling the cancer head on with the aim to stop its progression, making treatment more affordable, providing counselling to victims and their families, and much more.
Prostate cancer - 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostrate cancer in their lifetime. This is the most common cancer in men in the UK. Across the country, there are more than 333,500 living with and beyond the disease. By 2030, the aim is to halve the number of men dying from prostate cancer, and to halve the number of men facing serious ongoing side effects from treatment. Donations will support projects such as reducing side effects, helping men to know the early signs and symptoms of prostate cancer, providing tailored treatment to patients, and the ongoing work to find a cure.
Donations can be made either at https://moteam.co/calday-staff - or via ParentPay by selecting ‘Movember 2019’. Donations of all denominations will be gratefully received.
