Ex Caldeian, War hero & member of the Caterpillar Club sadly passes away.

We are deeply saddened by the news that former Caldeian Flight Lieutenant John Tilston passed away on the  20th of June 2021.

John, who attended Calday from 1932 to 1939 was captain of the school rugby team in 1938 and in 1940, he joined the RAF where he had an incredibly distinguished war record and was a proud member of the Caterpillar Club – an exclusive group for those who successfully parachuted from a disabled aircraft.

Also known as 'Tilly', he maintained a lifelong passion for aviation, joining the Auxiliary Air Force 610 Squadron after the war and teaching navigation to Air Cadets. The RAF has posted a touching tribute to 'Tilly' which can be read here: https://www.raf.mod.uk/news/articles/war-hero-and-member-of-the-caterpillar-club-sadly-passes-away/

You can also listen to John Tilston recount his exploits through the Imperial War Museum here: https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/80018099

We would like to extend our sincere condolences to his daughters and son - Ruthie, Cara and Peter and thank Tilly and all the veterans for their extraordinary contributions during World War 2.
