Calday Grange Grammar School has a long tradition of supporting a wide variety of charities and our staff and students always take pride in responding to need where they see it and at short notice. Not only do these charity events develop our sense of community and social responsibility but they are also valuable in enhancing leadership and team work skills.

Supporting local charities

Each year we choose a local charity to support, with the aim of raising as much money as we can. In the last few years, we have donated towards North West Air Ambulance, Jeans 4 Genes, Clatterbridge Cancer Charity and Wirral Mind. We are the top fundraising school for Genes for Jeans.

In 2019/2020 we chose to support Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and had raised over £1800 before lockdown. Other charities including Refilwe, MacMillan Cancer Support, Theo’s Fight, Wirral Foodbank, Movember, Anthony Nolan Trust and Breast Cancer Research had raised almost £6000.

During the lockdown period, staff, students and parents rose to the challenge with initiatives for helping the NHS. We went into PPE production mode and made 3000 visors and 1000 scrubs for front line workers, care homes and NHS staff. We are extremely grateful to Mr Roscoe and Mr Walker for spearheading these campaigns.

Instead of the school’s annual trip to Refilwe South Africa, made by Sixth Form students, it was decided to walk, run or cycle the 7636 miles that they would have flown. Students, staff, parents and old Caldeians all got involved and raised a fantastic £4363.

Our Christmas Appeals

At Christmas time, we support the ‘Superwhite Christmas Toy appeal’, run through Tranmere Rovers. In 2019 over 200 gifts of toys and books were donated; these are given out across the Wirral to disadvantaged children.

Students and staff also donated a phenomenal amount of food to Wirral Foodbank. The amount donated (in weight) was roughly equivalent to what they send to one of their largest centres to keep them going for a week and a half.

Calday has supported the Refilwe Community Project in South Africa for over 12 years, raising money for disadvantaged children in the area of Lanseria, Johannesburg and taking students there every year. Over that time the school has raised over £100,000 to support the charity.

Every year Sixth Form students travel to South Africa and assist with the maintenance and development of the site. Students also tutor local children in English and Maths. The school raises money through regular fundraising events during the year; these have included Quiz Nights, Three Peaks Challenge, the Wirral Coastal Walk, 24 Hour Football Matches, Cake Sales and Bag Packs.
