Religious Education

Religious Education is a vibrant, lively department that takes an active role in school life.  The two attainment targets for students are ‘learning about religion’ and ‘learning from religion’.  We take an academic approach to the study of religion and the human issues encountered in everyday life. The subject does not encourage one religious viewpoint over another and accepts well-reasoned thoughtful responses, irrespective of the stance a person takes. All students study Religious Education (RE), from Year 7 through to Year 11.

The subject is highly relevant to many areas of school life and has fostered links with a range of subject areas.  Religious Studies seeks to contribute to the spiritual, moral, social and cultural life of the school.  To foster that aim, we have encouraged students to take an active interest in the wider world and have organised visits to London, New York and Washington, to Krakow and more locally as well in order to provide an opportunity for students to learn more about their world.

Religious Studies has been a fundamental part of the school’s links with Refilwe, an orphanage in South Africa, where over 100 sixth form students have visited since 2006.  The school has also raised many thousands of pounds in charitable giving for this project.
