Calday Gifted Centre
Who we are...
The Centre for Gifted Children (CGC) is a programme dedicated to enhancing the learning opportunities for students deemed gifted and talented.
What we’ve done...
Previously the CGC was known as the Wirral Able Child Centre (WACC). WACC started in 1995, to serve the pupils of Calday and the wider community. Under “Excellence in Cities” WACC became Wirral wide with its outreach bases increasing in number. The purpose is to provide extension opportunities through our courses and resources for the Gifted and Talented pupils of Wirral. However we now feel that the time is right to extend this opportunity to all students.
What we do...
We facilitate classes and workshops that take place out of school hours and during the holidays, either at our Calday base or at an outreach centre. Alternatively, by invitation, we can take our workshops into any Wirral, Merseyside or North Wales primary school. We target mostly Year 4 to 7 students with our post school activities and mainly Key Stage 3 students with full day workshops.
The CGC has in the past offered very successful after school workshops to Wirral primary school students in Years 4, 5 and 6. The popularity of sessions has led to a natural expansion of the programme with a variety of options ranging from full day workshops to two and three day Easter and Summer camps. The extended programmes allow students the opportunity to explore subjects in greater detail and obviously to have more fun! We aim to offer stimulating and complimentary sessions giving those involved the opportunity to explore different activities outside of their normal curriculum.
Attendance to gifted and talented workshops is generally by invitation. Application forms are distributed via a network of primary schools across Wirral and Chester although some workshops are available directly through this website. (Please the 'CGC Workshops' link to the right of this page for details of events open for direct application).
Some of the activities offered last year across our many programmes are:
- Crime Scene Investigation
- Numeracy and Team Building
- Mad Science
- Maths Magic
- History Mysteries (Using artefacts to learn about events in history)
- Rocket Science
- Computer Programming
- Chinese Language and Culture
- Junior Tennis
- Problem Solving with Logical Maths
- Amazing Art
- Entertaining English
- Aspiring Architecture
Liverpool, North Wales and Chester Programme
Some of the areas that benefit from the programmes we offer are primary students in Liverpool, North Wales and Chester. Due to the great success of CGC programmes offered in Wirral we believe that the same acceleration opportunities will help enrich the students within these wider areas. To date similar programmes have been held at University of Chester, The DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, Chester and, Liverpool Hope University, Liverpool.
Gifted and Talented Workshops
We facilitate a programme of classes and workshops for gifted and talented children at Calday Grange Grammar School and at three outreach locations. We use a variety of venues including St George's Primary School, Wallasey, the Double Tree by Hilton, Chester, the University of Chester, Chester and Liverpool Hope University, Liverpool.
We run at least one workshop per term at each location. Attendance is open to all current year 4 and 5 boys and girls.
Workshops held at Calday are available to book through the school website, information about workshops currently available can be found by using the link 'CGC Calday Workshops' to the right of this page. To attend workshops held at one of our outreach centres you must receive an invitation. Invitations are distributed via a network of primary schools across Wirral, Chester and Liverpool.
